The Grand Canyon: My Plein Air Painting Experience
I recently spent a week visiting the Grand Canyon and doing some painting. The trip's primary intention was to take my mom the see the canyon and some other sights. So, my painting had to be quick and squeezed into the itinerary when I could. Along with myself and my mom, we were joined by my two sisters and brother.

Nice job Todd. I see an Open Box M being used, and I know the guy or gal knows their stuff for plein air painting. Yes, there are a lot of folks/artists on you tube, but it is nice just to see someone paint, particularly, alone with the scene. Then it's just you and nature, and all it has to offer those of us who are fortunate enough to be landscape painters. That, until they pry the brush from our cold dead hands!! LOL ;D. We are doing similar stuff lately; me with shadows of big trees inside a big wash down here in AZ. Nice to have the shade of the tree too, as it approaches 100 degrees (F), eh !. That's why I try to start a "zero dark hundred" on my way to a local state park (Catalina) and be done by 9 AM. Cheers from beautiful, and Highly Paintable, southern AZ (Oro Valley). : )

Hello Todd, just subscribed. I have been to the Grand Canyon, 40 years ago. I was impressed then, and your painting brought back some very fond memories. My wife and daughter and I had travelled from Australia to visit wife’s sister and the treat was to car trip from Vancouver to California. Beautiful scenery wherever you looked but the Grand Canyon took your breath away. I took to your speak and I very much appreciated what you said beside the painting which I thought was a task but small frames contained the effort. I shudder at the thought of taking on a large frame. Anyway, I enjoyed the video, I enjoyed the painting. Thank you.

Good one Todd, showing "plenty of beauty" to be seen on the beach, not just nature's,... well, I guess they are too! ;D Nothing like the feeling of being there, often tough going to paint, but a bad painting session is still a good experience just being there, the fresh air, the smells, the sounds, Everything. Like the "veteran" Open Box M, and nothing says "Rookie" like a "pristine" clean plein air set-up, eh? And their paintings, shown here on You Tube, usually "cannot suck enough" either. LOL ;D Cheers from beautiful AZ, by way of CA, where I had many good times painting on the beach, years ago, in particular in San Mateo County, just south of SF, where you can drive right up to the beaches, and park, and paint. And it used to be free too, in early 2000's. :)

Hi Robert! I use wet panel carriers of various sizes from Prolific Painter. They are basically a frame with two inward facing rabbets that allow the panels to face each other with a air gap. Secured with a couple of velcro straps. If you are handy with woodworking tools you could make your own.

On some, I paneled the sides with a painting, on canvas, glued on mahogany door skins; they are very "eye catching"!! LOL :D. But I use Ray Mars now, very light, and come in many sizes, but for painting panels only, not stretched canvases; one can google them!
